Mandiri Aikido Club

Mandiri Aikido Club was established to accommodate all the Muslimins who want to learn an effective martial art that goes according to the Aqidah, without violating the Sunnah.

All the techniques and movements being taught in Mandiri Aikido Club are relatively similar to what being taught in any other Aikido school in general.

Mandiri Aikido Club stands independently, having no affiliation to Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Japan or any other type of martial art organization.

Mandiri Aikido Club

Mandiri Aikido Club (MAC) is a martial art organization headquartered in Rawa Belong, Jakarta. MAC establishes independently by having no affiliation to any base of martial art organizations.

MAC was established in 2008 by Muhamad Aria Sensei and some of his students. Among them are Irwin Ananta, Abdul Aziz and Hilman. The intention and objectives are to accomodate the Syar'i martial art community and to provide a solution for Muslims so they can enjoy practicing a healthy sport while learning self-defense, that insyaAllah will be beneficial to them without violating any Syar'i laws.

In general, all the techniques taught in MAC classes are similar to every traditional Aikido techniques that are being practiced today, such as pins, joint-locks and throws (either by single or multiple attacker).

However, the training concept that MAC emphasizes is more on the Islamic way of culture. In which, MAC strives to adapt all the manner and gestures as well as etiquette only in accordance to Syariah, by eliminating elements of tasyabuh, bid'ah/syirik, khurafat and ikhtilat throughout the process of training.

This includes: To leave out the bow-down habit similar to sujud before the photograph of late founder of Aikido (Morihei Ueshiba); to leave out the bow-down habit similar to sujud & ruku to Sensei (teacher) or to fellow Aikido member at the beginning, during and the end of classes; to separate between the male and female member into different classes; and so on.

Moreover, MAC also eliminates all the martial art philosophies that contrary to the value of Islam.

Aikido is somewhat compatible with the characters of Muslims, where this type of martial art holds no tournaments, and most of its nature of techniques are defensive (expecting an attack). That way, it teaches us to be more patient and to control our emotion/temper.

MAC vision, is to become the only club/organization that people refer to, for learning the Syar'i Aikido martial art in Indonesia insya Allah.

Aikido

Background

Aikido is a self-defense art from Japan that was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969) which was introduced in the 1920's. Its style and movements were adapted from various ancient Japanese martial arts such as Daito-ryu, Aikijujitsu, Yagyu-ryu, Kenjutsu, and others.

The name Aikido is consisted of three words, Do (way/method), Ai (balance/harmony), dan Ki (life energy/spirit). Therefore, Aikido means "The way to harmonize your life energy". In Aikido, an opponent's attack is perceived as water that is not to be stopped nor held, but to be flowed to a safer direction instead.

Aikido teaches techniques like joint-locks, throws and how to neutralize an opponent's aggressive attack (bare handed o with weapon), against single or multiple attackers.

Aikido's nature of being defensive is not focusing on how to confront the opponent by punching or kicking, but more on how to implement the technique to grab, control and lead the opponent's attack so it will not harm us.

Techniques

Some of the unique movements in Aikido are called "Irimi"(entering) dan "Tenkan" (turn in circle) while utilizing opponent's power. These type of techniques has similarities ini accordance to the natural science and human body anatomy, hence the techniques being applied would be seemed simple and practical.

In "Irimi", an Aikidoka is using the minimum force of an attack as he tries to blend in with the opponent's motion, then guide or lead its force to another direction so it can be neutralized.

While "Tenkan" is using the maximum force of an attack - most of the time has a straight line of motion - then then guide or lead its force to another direction so it can be neutralized.

Joint lock techniques in Aikido comes in many variety, which aims to control the opponent so he can be neutralized without causing any damage. However, if these techniques are applied excessively, it will definitely cause a fatal injury.

Throwing is another technique in Aikido for controlling the force of an oppponent's attack by directing its flow with a little extra energy by using the opponent's inbalance position and momentum.

Besides teaching how to defense ourselves from a bare handed attacker, Aikido also teach students how to neutralize an armed attacker using weapon like sticks, knives or swords. In this matter, Aikido will train students the skills to use stick (jo) and wooden sword (boken) as well, by the time a student has mastered the techniques of bare hand self defense.

Training

Aikido training is always practiced in pairs, that way all the techniques being taught can be applied right away during the class.

In Aikido, there is no individual technique routine (Kata) as in Karate or any other Japanese martial art. This makes all the techniques ini Aikido entirely applicable.

Generally, Aikido training is conducted in an indoor class (dojo) and requires mat (tatami) as a training facility in order to maintain the safety and to minimize the injury possibility during practice.

A True Self Defense

Aikido does not hold any tournament nor throwing a match for championship at all. The purpose of it is to preserve the nature of self-defense itself and to maintain one's essence and spirit upon learning the true self-defense art.

Aikido keeps the instinct and attitude of a 'Bushidoka' on implementing the learned techniques, by responding only when encounters a threat or an attack.

Win or lose in a fight is relative, it depends on the moment and a judgement's point of view. For this reason, in the nature of self-defense, such term is not being celebrated in a form of tournament nor in any championship match.

Conclusion

Aikido training is truly beneficial for everyone, either male or female, from children to adults, even the elderly. It is because the system of training is safe and does not concentrating on just the physical strength, but more on the technique skills.

Testimony

"After years of practicing, Aikido has given me the feeling of confidence that makes me not to be easily panic in facing tough situation or tough condition. Most importantly, since taking the lesson, my physical condition and health gradually becomes stable." - Abdul Rozak, Rawabelong Dojo

"Aikido is suitable for all ages. I'm over 40 years old now but still can enjoy the training. It's because Aikido is focusing more on the techniques instead of power. So for all of you who's not so young anymore, it's never too late to practice." - Hermawan Prasetya, An Nashr Bintaro Dojo

"I have been looking for a martial art that is safe in Aqidah for a long time, alhamdulillah met with MAC and glad with the founder's commitment and its official members who's consistent with the principles. The dojo location that is close to masjid enables the students to perform prayer easily after the training." - Danny F Juddin, Al Hijriyah Ciputat Dojo

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do to start joining the class in Mandiri Aikido Club ?
You can just visit the Mandiri Aikido Club dojo that is close to your home or office. Assisted by dojo official, you may fill out the application form. After completing the registration and initial monthly payment, you can start taking the class.

What are the differences between Mandiri Aikido Club and regular Aikido organization?
Mandiri Aikido Club is a self defense organization created for the muslimin, that is why in its method of training and gestures, all the things that contradict with the Aqidah are being eliminated, such as bow gestures similar to ruku and sujud, mixture of male and female in the same class, and many more. Other than that, there is no much difference.

From the technique wise, is it also different with regular Aikido ?
All techniques being taught in Mandiri Aikido Club are the same techniques being taught in the origin country of Aikido, which is Japan. The naming for all the techniques and movements in Mandiri Aikido Club is also still in Japanese language.

What are the benefits I will get from learning this self defense art in Mandiri Aikido Club ?
Besides boosting confidence level, increases physical shape and become skillful in applying self defense techniques (either bare handed or armed with weapon), you also are able to avoid all the elements of tasyabuh, bid'ah/syirik, khurafat and ikhtilat that generally exists within self defense organizations. Hence, the knowledge you have learned and soon to be passed to others will not violate any syariah law and insya Allah good for here and the hereafter.

I am not so young anymore, is it too late for me to start practicing self defense again ?
Movements in Aikido tend to focus on techniques application rather than physical strength only. So for you who are not considered that young anymore, then Aikido is the best tool for you because this type of self defense doesn't require too much of physical strength. Another advantages are, you can maintain a good shape while at the same time mastering the skill of self defense techniques at mature age.

I am having a financial difficulties, but really eager to learn a self defense at Mandiri Aikido Club, can I get helped ?
If you are having difficulties (financially) but have a strong will to learn the syar'i self defense art, then Mandiri Aikido Club will support you by providing a scholarship program until you obtain a black belt. Please be noted, you are expected to be able to continue the knowledge you have learned onto others, by being one of the Mandiri Aikido Club instructors.

How long would it take to obtain a black belt ?
Normally it is ranging from 3 to 4 years. But, it all depends on performance base and student's readiness to take the black belt test. A dojo instructor has the authority to decide whether a student is ready or not ready for taking the black belt test.
